Seismic Hazard Analysis of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Abstract
Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, are the capitals and the governmental, industrial and population centers of their respective countries. The sites of both these cities have been subjected to major earthquakes in the past. We have undertaken probabilistic seismic hazard analyses of these two cities following the same procedures and methods as those used for the U.S. National Seismic Hazard Map. We included data from earthquake catalogs as well as available geologic studies. Major challenges in the preparation of these maps included selection of the appropriate attenuation relationships and the limited knowledge of geologic slip rates. The probabilistic seismic hazard analyses will be used as the basis for future loss estimation studies.
