Convergence on N-body plus SPH
Abstract
Our goal is to create a flexible and accurate code for simulating interacting galaxies. The use of smoothed particle hydrodynamics for gas modeling along with straightforward gravitational solving for gravitational particles means that two-component models are easily created. We use our flexible 'mass99' N-Body code with SPH for gas dynamics using a variety of tree walks, acceptance criteria, particle types, timestep methods, SPH parameters, and the inevitable magic numbers. We wish to maximize numerical resolution while also choosing accurate SPH parameters to either simulate, or mimic, galactic gas dynamics. Looking at a stable single galaxy as well as a "Cartwheel" type collision, we can evaluate an SPH parameter matrix and converge on a 'best match' set of values, that can then be used for extrapolation and evolutionary studies of galactic systems.
