Graduate students as professional educators in undergraduate astronomy laboratories.
Abstract
We present examples of our work as professional educators in the development and teaching of undergraduate astronomy laboratories for non-astronomy majors at Columbia University. We illustrate how our planning and delivery are designed to incorporate what has been learned from astronomy education research, educational best practice, and the national teaching and professional development standards - each instructor is able to develop their own teaching philosophy and style based on these. We show the outcomes of our strategies in terms of the engagement, enthusiasm and understanding of the students that we teach, and changes made to the lab infrastructure as a whole.
