Diffuse Emission in Shapley Supercluster
Abstract
We have scanned the Shapley supercluster region with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) to search for diffuse X-ray emission from the intra-supercluster hot gas. Boughn (1998) found some evidence for large scale emission from the local supercluster using HEAO data. Soltan et al. (1996) found evidence for diffuse emission around clusters of galaxies cross-correlating ROSAT data with Abell clusters. We found some direct evidence for diffuse emission from the intra-cluster environment of the Shapley supercluster (Molnar and Jahoda 1999). Here, based on a more detailed analysis, we discuss the possible origin of this emission, which can either be localized around clusters, or it may fill the supercluster environment.
