Photonic crystal based resonant antenna with a very high directivity
Abstract
Cavities built around layer-by-layer photonic crystals were used to enhance the radiation characteristics of a monopole antenna. The measured radiation patterns of the antenna structure at resonance frequency of the cavity show a single major lobe. These radiation patterns agree well with the theoretical results obtained using finite-difference-time-domain technique. The maximum directivity of the antenna structure was measured to be 310, along with a power enhancement of 180. The reflection and transmission measurements were used to understand the enhancement in the directivity and the power. Radiation frequency of the antenna can be tuned within the band-gap of the photonic crystal.
