Complex spin interactions in GaAs quantum wells
Abstract
We investigate the spin precession of electrons confined in doped single and multiple GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells using time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy at temperatures from 5K to 300K. The measurements reveal electron g-factors that are strongly dependent on the applied transverse magnetic field, and a spin precession that is a function of both the field's angle and its polarity. Moreover, a surprising dependence on the excitation frequency and polarization is observed, along with metastable spin states. Characteristic stability times as large as tens of minutes are seen for some of these relaxation processes in modest fields. These dynamics are associated with the coupling of electrons to nuclear spins in the quantum well.
