Exchange interaction in the manganites
Abstract
It is shown that the magnetic structure of La_1-xCa_xMnO3 is correctly described within an electronic mechanism alone, taking into account the degeneracy of the eg orbitals and the static Jahn-Teller distortion at the Mn sites. Treating the Mn(e_g) and the O(2p) electrons as active and the Mn(t_2g) electrons as passive, the model hamiltonian is solved by exact diagonalization and by fourth-order perturbation theory to obtain the exchange interaction between the Mn atoms on the Mn-O-Mn bond in the manganites. The magnetic structures of the end members LaMnO3 and CaMnO3 as well as that of La_0.5Ca_0.5MnO3 are all described correctly within this model.
