Total reaction and neutron-removal cross sections of 30A-60A MeV Be isotopes on Si and Pb
Abstract
Total reaction cross sections, σ_R, for all bound Be isotopes on Si, and neutron-removal cross sections for most isotopes, were determined by their energy losses in a telescope containing 9 transmission Si detectors. Similar measurements for ^10-12Be on Pb were made with a telescope containing Pb targets separated by thin Si detectors. The Si σ_R's were adequately fitted by microscopic model calculations which include only nuclear forces. The model underpredicted the Pb σ_R's, showing the presence of electromagnetic dissociation. In some cases we determined both total neutron-removal cross sections (through total energy deposit) and those for fragments left in the ground state (through particle identification). Some large differences (e.g., for ^9Be) were observed.
