Microcalorimeter measurements of L x-ray spectra of highly charged ions
Abstract
We use an x-ray microcalorimeter to measure L spectra of highly charged ions generated by an electron beam ion trap. The broadband and high-resolution capability of our microcalorimeter allows us to identify many lines of different charge states for the first time. We use advanced modeling techniques to describe the charge state distribution in the EBIT plasma. Systematic changes in the operating parameters allow us to study certain effects that determine the charge state distribution. The detailed study of these effects carries the potential to advance the understanding of complex x-ray emitting astrophysical plasmas.
