Design Characteristics of the Multichannel FIR Tangential Interferometer/Polarimeter (FIReTIP) for NSTX
Abstract
A seven-channel far infrared interferometer/polarimeter (FIReTIP) system operating at 119 µm is being developed for the National Spherical Tokamak Experiment (NSTX). FIReTIP system will be used to measure toroidal magnetic field modified by both paramagnetism at low β plasmas and diamagnetism at high β plasmas in NSTX. In addition, FIReTIP will provide a time dependent 2-D electron density profile, simultaneously. This system utilizes a triple FIR laser system including Stark-tuned laser in order to have a vibration independent measurement of Faraday rotation and firm control of IF frequency. This paper will present details of the system design including optical arrangements and the signal detection system. The effect of paramagetism and diamagnetism under various operating scenarios on NSTX will be studied via TRANSP to address the sensitivity of chordal and local measurement of toroidal magnetic field and density profiles using FIReTIP system.
