X-ray Analysis of the Structure of a Thermotropic Copoly(ester-imide)
Abstract
The structure of a thermotropic copoly(ester-imide) prepared from p-hydroxybenzoic acid (48 mole %), dihydroxybenzophenone (26 mole %), and 1,6-bis(trimellitimide)-hexane (26 mole %) has been investigated by x-ray diffraction. The wide angle x-ray data for as-spun and annealed fibers contain a series of non-periodic layer lines that are similar to those seen for fibers of other copolymers that have extended conformations and completely random comonomer sequences. The structure has been analyzed by simulating the scattering patterns for chains with different conformations and sequence distributions. Excellent agreement is obtained for sinuous extended chains of random sequence, in which the hexane unit can have either all-trans or tg^+tg^-t conformations. This agreement is lost when there are significant changes to non-random sequence statistics.
