Magnetic Behavior and Magnetic Phase Diagram of Mn_1- xNi_xCl_2.4H_2O.*
Abstract
The pure components of this mixed magnet are isomorphous antiferromagnets ordering at 1.62 K (Mn) and 2.99 K (Ni). The easy axes of each are near the monoclinic c axis, but the ordered spin arrangements are not known to be identical. Mixtures studied here span the entire composition range. Remarkably, the powder susceptibility for each mixture shows a rapid increase near the transition, rather than a maximum as for the pure components. The transition temperature, identified with an inflection point in the increasing susceptibility, varies monotonically with composition between x = 0 and 1. The resulting T-x magnetic phase boundary exhibits systematic curvature. Magnetization data give evidence for spin canting in the mixtures. Differences in pure component single ion anisotropies, and perhaps also different degrees of exchange anisotropy, are presumably responsible for the unusual mixture behavior. *Supported by NSF-Solid State Chemistry-Grant No. DMR-9527357 and by the Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society.
