Search for plasma instability driven coherent emission in a quantum well structure
Abstract
We study in detail a quantum structure employing a selective extraction/injection scheme to achieve a desired non-equilibrium distribution that can generate a plasma instability. For a given bias, the steady state populations of individual levels for given extraction, injection, and inter-level collision rates are determined by balance equations. The ensuing I-V response is obtained and compared with experimental results. We also calculate the high frequency response employing RPA. The conditions for the occurrence of plasma instability are determined. The radiation emission level is estimated.
