Thermometry by Arrays of Small Tunnel Junctions
Abstract
A theoretical treatment is presented which demonstrates the importance of including the effects of stray capacitances and the environment in the analysis of accurate thermometry by arrays of N tunnel junctions. By using the exact solution for the free energy of a one-dimensional array, we calculate the full width at half minimum of the conductance peak and find that due to the presence of stray capacitances it depends on N nonlinearly (whereas the existing theory predicts a linear relationship), consistent with the existing experimental results. In addition, the quantum Langevin equation method is adopted to study environmental effects.
