μSR studies on La_2-x-yRE_xSr_yCuO4 with RE=Nd, Eu
Abstract
In rare earth doped La_2-ySr_yCuO_4, the structural phase at low temperatures is not always the LTO phase (low temperature orthorhombic). Two additional phases can be observed, a low temperature tetragonal phase (LTT) and a second low temperature orthorhombic phase (Pccn) with reduced orthorhombic splitting. In La_1.8-yEu_0.2Sr_yCuO_4, the LTO--LTT transition is found for a wide range of Sr concentrations. This allows the investigation of the magnetic phase diagram of the LTT phase in comparison to that of the LTO phase (La_2-ySr_yCuO_4). The most striking difference is the formation of static charge stripes combined with incommensurate magnetic order at y ≈ 1 \over 8 in the LTT phase instead of superconductivity in the LTO phase. The onset of magnetic order is clearly visible in μSR even if macroscopic methods have difficulties due to spurious superconductivity. We will present the magnetic phase diagram of La_1.8-yEu_0.2Sr_yCuO4 with y ranging between 0.014 and 0.20. For y=0.15, these results will be compared to μSR experiments on La_1.85-xNd_xSr_0.15CuO_4.
