Analyzing power in pparrow pnπ^+
Abstract
The pparrow pnπ^+ reaction has been investigated at IUCF at 325, 350 and 375 MeV by detecting reaction pions and protons in coincidence. For the first time a polarized beam and a polarized internal target are used for such measurements. The target is a polarized atomic beam fed into a storage cell(T. Wise et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A336), 410 (1993). Angular distributions and energies of the outgoing protons and pions were measured for 6^circ <θ_lab <30^circ and over the full range of φ by a system of wire-chambers and plastic scintillators. Our analyzing powers for pion c.m. angles 0^circ <θ_cm^π^+<90^circ permit comparison with a recent theoretical study by Hanhart(Christoph Hanhart, Ph.D. thesis, University of Bonn (1997)) and a prior expermentfootnote W.W. Daehnick et al., Phys. Lett. B (to be published) using a very different apparatus. A preliminary value for the analyzing power agrees within error with the results from the earlier experiment where the pion momenta were reconstructed from the observed proton and neutron momenta.
