Spin-dependent total cross section of the reaction pp arrow ppπ^0
Abstract
The spin-dependent cross section of the reaction pp arrow ppπ^0 has been measured with the PINTEX facility at IUCF: a polarized internal storage cell target, fill from an atomic beam source(T. Wise et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A336), 410 (1993), and a polarized beam. This reaction, measured at 325, 350 and 375 MeV, was investigated by detecting the outgoing protons in coincidence. Near threshold, the measured observable is determined by the quantum numbers of the lowest partial wave. At these energies, our measurement is sensitive to the onset of the higher partial waves, and provides a crucial test of the theory of pion production in the NN system. Preliminary results of Δ σT measurements will be presented. Measurements of Δ σ_L, needing longitudial polarized beam, are in progress.
