Detonation Velocity of Melt-cast ADN and ADN/nanodiamond mixtures
Abstract
Detonation velocities of confined cylinders of melt-cast ADN/ZnO (99.5/0.5 by wt.), ADN/nanodiamond/ZnO (92.4/7.2/0.4), ADN/AN/ZnO (95.5/4.0/0.5) and ADN/AN/ZnO/nanodiamond (88.0/4.5/0.5/7.0)have been measured using a streak camera. Velocities near 4 to 4.5 mm/microsec were obtained for a 1.3 cm diameter sample confined by steel and a 2.5 cm diameter ADN/AN/ZnO cylinder. Some samples failed to propagate a detonation. Samples were prepared by placing agglomerated diamonds in methanol and sonicating this solution to disperse the diamonds. ADN was added to the suspension and the methanol was driven off to produce a powder. SEM photographs of the powder show small agglomerates of diamonds on the surface of ADN crystals. This powder was remelted and poured into hollow cylinders of plastic or steel.
