Shifted Identical Bands
Abstract
Spontaneous fission of ^252Cf was studied with 72 large Compton suppressed Ge detectors in Gammasphere. New isotopes ^160Sm and ^162Gd were identified. The level energies were established to high spins up to 14^+ in ^152,154,156_ 60Nd_92,94,96, ^156,158,160_ 62Sm_94,96,98, and ^160,162_ 64Gd_96,98. These nuclei exhibit a remarkable variety of identical bands or bands where the energies and moments of inertia are shifted by constant amounts. These are the first examples of the new phenomena of shifted identical bands. Different shifts are found in Sm and Gd nuclei differing by 2n and 4n and in Nd, Sm, and Gd nuclei differing by 2p, 4p, and α. Such shifted bands were not found in neutron-deficient rare earth nuclei. Supported in part by U.S. DOE.
