High Power Free Electron Maser Experiment
Abstract
Design has been completed for a 17 GHz, 500 MW free-electron maser (FEM) amplifier. The tube uses a 500 kV, 5 kA, 6 cm-diameter annular electron beam. The electron beam interacts with a TM02 mode in a cylindrical rippled-wall structure. The ripple period is 3.5 cm and the modulation amplitude is 7for this device over that of conventional solid beam tubes. Because the device operates in a high-order mode, it scales favorably to high power at high frequency. Development of various components is complete and first experimental results will be presented.
