Third Order Harmonic Response and Intermodulation Distortions of YBCO Thin Films at Microwave Frequencies
Abstract
The nonlinear response of HTS is a serious problem in applications of microwave devices since it causes the generation of higher harmonics and intermodulation products. We have investigated the nonlinear microwave response of Y2 Ba 3 Cu 3 O 7 thin films that were manufactured by either a sputtering or a co-evaporation method. In the measurements, the third order harmonic response of thin film samples and intermodulation distortions of thin film resonators were evaluated. While all films showed a comparable linear microwave response, i.e. surface resistance in the superconducting and normal state, the nonlinear microwave response differed significantly in magnitude, power and temperature dependence with respect to the manufacturing procedure. We will discuss these results in the context of the microscopic origin of the nonlinear response.
