Parity Nonconservation in ^238U Neutron Resonances
Abstract
Parity-nonconserving asymmetries in p-wave cross sections were measured for longitudinally polarized neutrons incident on ^238U. A previous measurement(see Zhu et al., Phys Rev C 46) (1992) 768 observed one asymmetry greater than 2.5 σ. With an improved experimental apparatus, the recent measurement found six effects. A multilevel fitting code was used to extract resonance parameters as well as PNC asymmetries. By treating the compound nucleus statistically, the RMS PNC matrix element was extracted from the PNC-asymmetry distribution and agrees with the previous value but has greater precision. An experimental overview and results will be given.
