Predicted Structure in Velocity, Impact-Parameter and Final-n Dependences of Ion-Rydberg Capture.
Abstract
A classical-trajectory calculation of electron capture by singly charged ions from H-like linear-Rydberg target atoms that are directed either toward or away from the oncoming ion beam reveals peaks in the total-capture cross section (TCCS), in the final n-state (n_f) distribution and in the capture probability vs. impact parameter b, over a range of reduced velocities tilde v = v_ion/v_Bohr = 0.15 - 2.4. Capture has been separated into contributions of odd-swap processes,( D.M. Homan, M.J. Cavagnero and D.A. Harmin, Phys. Rev. A 50), R1965 (1994). which result in wholly or partially separated peaks in the total and partial cross sections. The peak at nf ≈ n_initial=24 that results from one-swap capture is accompanied by another peak that moves down from n_f=35 toward 25 between tilde v =0.45 and 0.6 due to three-swap capture. One-, three- and five-swap captures for tilde v < 0.7 maximize near b = 3.5, 2.5 and 2.0, respectively. TCCS peaks have been observed in recent experiments on Na n=24.
