Studies of Rare K^+ Decays
Abstract
Experiment E865 at the BNL AGS is a search for the decay K^+arrow π^+ μ^+ e^- with a sensitivity of ~ 3× 10-12. The experimental apparatus involves a magnetic spectrometer and detectors capable of identifying the final state particles species with a low probability of error. Along with the muon number violating decay mode, the apparatus is capable of detecting significantly more events from other rare decay modes than have heretofore been observed. The apparatus will be described and results from the first run of the experiment, in 1995, will be presented.
