Remotely controlled Operation for repetitive Data Acquisition: The Future of the Korgialenios Astronomical Station of Kryonerion, Greece
Abstract
The main lines of a broad research programme in astronomical instrumentation which was conceived and proposed in 1993 aiming principally to the radical improvement of the performance and to the widening of the scientific perspectives of the M. Korgialenios 1.2m reflector of the National Observatory of Athens, are presented. Latest advances in control systems theory, robotics, faint light detection technologies, image processing, data transmission techniques and computer networks, were employed to boost the telescope to its limit and provide grounds for substantial acceleration of the research work carried out by the small community of experimentalists - interpreters of data obtained from astronomical installations within Greece.
