Nuclear deformation and sub-barrier fusion cross sections
Abstract
We present calculations of sub-barrier fusion cross sections for spherical projectiles and deformed targets. For a given spherical-projectile and deformed-target combination we calculate exactly the sum of the Coulomb and nuclear potentials. There are no free parameters in the calculations, except for a simple energy shift of the calculated cross sections. The shapes of the target nuclei are taken from a global calculation of nuclear ground-state shapes that determined the ɛ2, ɛ3, ɛ4, and ɛ6 shape coordinates from a minimization of the nuclear potential energy. The cross sections are obtained by integrating the transmission coefficients over angle, which are obtained by calculating the barrier penetrability at each angular momentum by use of the WKB approximation. Some of the results, where high-precision experimental data are available, are analyzed in terms of "fusion-barrier distributions".
