Laboratory Infrared Spectroscopic Studies of Crystalline Nitriles with Relevance to Outer Planetary Systems
Abstract
Complex refractive indices, nand k, and integrated absorption coefficients of strong bands were determined for thin crystalline films of acetonitrile (CH 3CN), propionitrile (CH 3CH 2CN), acrylonitrile (CH 2CHCN), hydrogen cyanide (HCN) cyanogen (C 2N 2), cyanoacetylene (HC 3N), dicyanoacetylene (C 4N 2) and cyanopropyne (CH 3C 3N) at 35 and 95 K in the region 5000-80 cm -1(2-125 μm). This was done using an iterative Kramers-Kronig analysis. Integrated absorption coefficients for strong bands of these crystalline nitriles were also determined. These data, along with infrared data from future space missions such as the Infrared Space Observatory and Cassini, will help in the identification and quantification of crystalline nitriles on Titan and other outer planetary bodies.
