Local Structures Around Tb and Mn Luminescent Centers in Doped Nanocrystals of Y_2O3 and ZnS
Abstract
X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements were made near the Mn K-edge and Tb L-edge for Mn-doped ZnS and Tb-doped Y_2O3 nanocrystals with different size distributions, respectively. The results are compared with the XAFS spectra obtained from the respective Mn- and Tb-doped bulk compounds. The short-range-order structures obtained in the nanocrystals show substantial local lattice distortion, and a dependance on the small particle size distribution. The location of impurity atoms and the possibility of formation of small clusters of dopants in the nanocrystals are also investigated. * Research supported in part by DOE.
