Spin Textures and Edge Reconstruction
Abstract
We consider the problem of edge reconstruction for an interacting ν =1 quantum Hall state as the confining potential is softened. We show that the reconstruction by a discrete movement of charge found by Chamon and Wen(C. Chamon and X. G. Wen, Phys Rev B 49), 8227 (1994) is preempted by an instability towards the formation of an edge texture that allows for more gradual variation in the edge density in the manner made familiar by earlier work on skyrmions in the bulk. We comment on possible experimental signatures of the textured edges. We also show that this effect is absent for ν=3.
