Measurement of the Interaction Parameter for PS/P4VP
Abstract
We have determined the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (\chi) for blends of Polystyrene (PS) and Poly (4-Vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) by three different methods. Firstly we measured the lamellar spacing in a microphase separated films of PS-P4VP diblock copolymers by secondary ion mass spectrometry and atomic force microscopy. Secondly we determined the interfacial width between homopolymer layers of dPS and P4VP by neutron and X-ray reflectometry. Finally we measured the contact angle between droplets of homopolymer PS which had dewet a P4VP homopolymer film. From each of these experiments we calculated a value of \chi. These values of \chi are much larger than those of other immiscible polymer pairs. We discuss the importance of this result.
