Experimental characterization of X-ray driven ablation of brominated CH
Abstract
X-ray driven ablation of brominated CH (3% at. fraction) planar foils has been characterized experimentally by different techniques : burnthrough experiments and measurement of foil motion induced by ablation. X-ray radiation was created in a holhraum irradiated by the Nova laser and its history was monitored. These experiments were carried out with two kinds of laser pulses : 1 ns duration square pulse and 2.5 ns shaped pulse. Results of burnthrough experiments are presented for a scan of foil thickness. Some data about shock propagation in CHBr are also presented. Foil motion was characterized by X-ray backlighting with a good enough contrast to enable analysis of the compressed foil. Experimental results are compared with numerical simulations.
