Three Dimensional Flow Instabilities During Alloy Solidification
Abstract
Three dimensional flow instabilities during solidification of a binary alloy are investigated. Results of the stability analysis and numerical computations for case of deformed interfaces are determined which provide information on neutral stability curve, velocity data and density data for solid fraction perturbation in the mushy layer adjacent to the solidified material. Two distinct hexagonal modes of convection are found to be the most critical ones for sufficiently small amplitude of motion. The importance and roles of these two modes in relation to chimney formation in the mushy layer will also be discussed.
