Origin of HI shells in the Milky Way: OB associations or HVCs.
Abstract
The galactic distribution of 63 HI shells discovered by Heiles (1979, 1984) is discussed. Their ages are estimated using a model of an expanding infinitesimally thin shell. An equilibrium shell formation rate is derived and we conclude that its radial distribution in the galactic disc is close to the distribution of the stars indicating that the majority of the observed shells in the Milky Way is related to the star formation rather than to the infall of HVCs.
