MHD power generation for advanced weapons applications
Abstract
A 15 MW. magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power system was designed, built, and tested. The MHD power system, called the Pamir-3U, produced 15 MW of net output power from the three MHD channels of the system. The three plasma generator MHD channel units are connected to an electrical circuit that provide an electrical power to energize the magnet and delivers electrical current to the load. With this arrangement, a voltage of approximately 500 to 600 volts and a current of 25,000 to 30,000 amperes are delivered to the load. A preliminary acceptance tests program consisting of five power tests and several preliminary tests, was conducted.
