Sarcopterygian interrelationships: How far are we from a phylogenetic consensus?
Abstract
Areas of phylogenetic instability among basal sarcopterygians are investigated using bootstrap; selective addition and deletion of taxa; nodal recoding and successive weighting. Four major relationship problems among sarcopterygians are recognized: (1) the position of the Actinistia and the Onychodontida; (2) the position and composition of the Dipnoiformes; (3) the phylogenetic status of the "osteolepiforms"; and (4) the phylogenetic status of the Elpistostegalia. Interrelationships among higher groups of sarcopterygians are fairly well-corroborated but the resolution at lower taxonomic levels is still poorly understood.
