Statistical analysis of pulse nulling in pulsars
Abstract
A statistical analysis of nulling pulsars is made. We find the correlation between the nulling fraction NF and the pulse width We to be stronger than the correlations between NF and P or between NF and α previously found by Biggs. Using the Filippenko and Radhakrishnan model, an approximate expression for NF is derived and the above statistical result is explained. Although nulling is not correlated with age as a whole, pulsars showing conspicuous nulling are nevertheless located on a the line close to, and parallel to the line of radio emission cutoff, showing that such pulsars are indeed old objects. Possible origins of pulse nulling are briefly discussed.
