Solving the GRB Mystery: Future Missions and Observations
Abstract
The solution of the GRB mystery will involve the determination of the correct burster distance scale. This is a necessary, although possibly not sufficient, first step. I briefly review approximately 15 “distance indicators”, some rather unconventional for astronomy, which could provide this scale. They range from the obvious, like the detection of quiescent counterparts, to statistical analyses which might reveal anisotropies, to measurements of gravitational radiation. I discuss several currently planned and proposed experiments which could carry out some of these measurements.
