Chilbolton Advanced Meteorological Radar: A tool for multi-disciplinary atmospheric research
Abstract
The Chilbolton Advanced Meteorological Radar is used not only for propagation studies, but for cloud physics, hydrology, meteorology, and environment related programs. We describe here recent developments, which include the implementation of polarization-diversity techniques as well as added phase and Doppler capabilities. Section 2 deals with the reasons for developing the switched polarization method, whilst section 3 deals with its hardware realization. Some aspects of the theory behind the signal processing are considered in section 4, together with their software implementation and a brief description of the overall system. Finally, section 5 outlines the parameters measured by the Chilbolton Radar and gives examples of areas where the data are currently being used.
