Example of shock waves in unstable media: the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation
Abstract
Dissipationless shock waves in modulational unstable one-dimensional media are investigated for the simplest example of the integrable focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NS) equation. Our approach is based on the construction of a special exact solution of the Whitham-NS system, which “partially saturates” the modulational instability.
