Surface Plasmons of Two-Dimensional and Quasi Three-Dimensional Electron Gases
Abstract
We report our study of the far-infrared linear response of electron gases in graded GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well heterostructures. The structures studied included a heterojunction, a parabolic quantum well, and a well with a parabolic central region joined smoothly to linearly -graded edges. For the heterojunction and the parabolic well, we investigated the effects of periodic, lateral modulation of the electron density on the intra- and inter -subband excitations for electron gas widths ranging from well within the Fermi wavelength lambda_ {F}, to ~ lambda_{F}. To investigate the non-local effects, we study an electron gas confined in a parabolic well with linear lip. The potential of a parabolic well with linear lip is equivalent to the potential of a uniform positive slab which ends abruptly.
