Design study into the delamination behavior of tapered composites
Abstract
A fracture mechanics based analysis has been used to predict the tensile delamination load of tapered laminated plates. Simple laminate examples are used to show the effect of dropped ply thickness, number of delaminating surfaces, and dropped ply axial stiffness on the delamination load. Using these trends and acknowledged guidelines, a design is presented for a complex tapered plate with a view to maximizing the onset of delamination.
