MAGSS-14: Medium Altitude Global Mobile Satellite System with enhanced regional coverage
Abstract
The basic parameters and performance of a Medium Altitude Global Satellite System (MAGSS-14) considered as an effective way to provide voice communications services to users equipped with handheld and portable terminals are described. MAGSS-14 is based on 14 medium size satellites in a Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) constellation, and offers significant advantages in terms of gradual buildup and global coverage. The constellation parameters are optimized to enhance the coverage in terms of minimum elevation angle in the regions contained between 30 and 60 deg latitude. Network topology, payload design, link budgets, and system capacity are also discussed.
