Design and build of the Brillant Pebbles Passive IR sensor
Abstract
This paper describes the design, construction, and preflight certification testing of the Brilliant Pebbles Passive IR sensor. The passive IR sensor is comprised of a 64 x 64 HgCdTe hybrid focal plane array, cassegrain telescope, switchable filter and compensating electronics. The switchable filter allows the passive IR sensor to image in the Midwave or Long-wave IR bands. The sensor performance exceeded the 40,000:1 dynamic range requirement, with less than 5 percent pixel outages. The corrected room temperature sensor uniformity at calibration was 0.03 percent and boresight stability was held to 8.7 microradians over preflight certification testing. Preflight certification testing included temperature cycling, vacuum operation, vibration and shock.
