Separated flow past smooth slender bodies at incidence
Abstract
A comprehensive study of solutions of the vortex-sheet model for flows past conical and non-conical slender bodies with a wide range of cross sections is presented. A number of important physical mechanisms are identified that perform a dominant role in determining the qualitative features of such slender separated flows. The technique has predicted the occurrence of asymmetric flows by way of a process of bifurcation from symmetric flows, the strong influence of body cross-sectional shape on the development of symmetric flows, the limit of conical flow about conical geometries and the development of new cores in the feeding vortex sheet.
