Structural ceramics aspects of production process and selected properties
Abstract
This article contains basic information on the production and properties of structural ceramics. In the first part of the article the authors discuss the mineralogical aspects of the most popular raw materials (alumina, zirconium oxide, silicon nitride, boron nitride, and silicon carbonate) and aspects of the production process. The authors emphasize the importance of the microstructure of the raw material for optimizing the properties of the ceramics. From the standpoint of applications, the properties of ceramics are limited to mechanical, thermomechanical, and electrical properties.
