Scenes from general relativistic astrophysics.
Abstract
Four topics from relativistic astrophysics are discussed here. These include: (1) the upper limit on rotation of relativistic stars and its relation to the equation of state of matter at high density; (2) astrophysical evidence against Witten's hypothesis that, instead of iron, strange quark matter may be the true ground state of baryons; (3) the normal modes of oscillation of rotating stars (knowledge of these is needed to fix the upper limit on rotation of relativistic stars; (4) the normal modes of oscillation of black holes.
