Propagation aspects for the planning of land mobile satellite systems
Abstract
ESA has conducted experimental campaigns to investigate propagation-impairment problems, potentially encountered on such satellite mobile services as voice and high quality digital-sound broadcasting, as a function of frequency, elevation angle, and environment. Attention is given to results obtained in the L- and S-bands, with a view to the link between system-planning requirements and propagation-data analysis. Forward error-correction schemes can handle certain types of signal degradation, and knowledge of fade dynamics allows testing of coding and modulation schemes on link simulators in the laboratory.
