Gas photoionization by ultrashort laser pulses with two-photon excitation of the intermediate level
Abstract
Gas photoionization generated by a laser pulse propagating under conditions of coherent two-photon interaction with atoms (or molecules) of the medium is examined. A small yield of electrons when the photoionization cross section is small is shown to remain small in a strong field when the cross section is large. This is a consequence of the ionization broadening of the intermediate level and leads to an extremum in the cross-section dependence of the ionization yield.
