Zonal wind in the south polar regions of Venus from data of a radio transillumination.
Abstract
The temperature and pressure data in the southern hemisphere of Venus obtained by the method of radio transillumination using the Venera 15 and 16 satellites are used to determine the altitude profiles of zonal wind velocity at the altitudes from 50 to 80 km. The altitude and latitude dependences of zonal wind velocity in the south latitude interval from 66 to 83° are given. A yet in the circumpolar atmosphere of the southern hemisphere at the latitudes 70 - 72° is discovered, at which wind velocity achieves the maximum value 115 m s-1 at the altitude 62 km.
