Two-level systems: space curve formalism, Berry's phase and Gauss-Bonnet theorem
Abstract
The authors study the projective space representation of a general two-level system introduced by Feynman et al. (1957). This allows a mapping onto a space curve. Geometric phases, Berry's phase and its complementary phase are calculated. The relation with the Gauss-Bonnet theorem is discussed and an inequality for the Berry phase is derived.
